Dufur, Ore. – Fire growth on the Larch Creek Fire remain driven by afternoon winds and highly receptive fuels. An infrared flight this morning showed approximately 3,100 acres of growth from yesterday. Fire behavior moderated overnight with lower temperatures and winds. This allowed firefighters to engage closer to active areas of the fire, building line and securing perimeters around Shadybrook Road and Highway 216 west of Tygh Valley. High temperatures and windy conditions are expected this afternoon, posing ongoing challenges to the firefighting effort.

Today, air and ground crews will be active on all sides of the fire, building fire line, reinforcing existing line, and monitoring for hot spots. Structure protection will be focused on the community of Tygh Valley, Pine Hollow and Shadybrook subdivisions, and along Highway 216. Additional firefighting resources will continue to arrive from around the nation to support current efforts.

Firefighter and public safety are the highest priority as evacuations remain in place. Two firefighters experienced minor heat-related illness during suppression efforts and are back on the line today. As the atmosphere stabilizes overnight, smoke is increasing in some communities in south Wasco County.
